The Supreme Court of India, while reviewing the case of the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, emphasized that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should not be rushed into filing a chargesheet in such a sensitive case. The court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, examined the CBI’s status report. The CBI is investigating potential evidence tampering and the compromise of the crime scene. The bench urged patience, noting that the agency is actively working to uncover the truth.
The court also highlighted the disturbing nature of the investigation's findings so far. During the hearing, it was revealed that while the Kolkata Police submitted 27 minutes of CCTV footage, the CBI is probing if there is more to the footage, as initial reports suggested a much longer duration. Furthermore, the court ordered the removal of the victim's identity and sensitive details from social media and Wikipedia.
This case has sparked massive protests, particularly among junior doctors, who have been protesting for over a month. Following recent talks with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, some of their key demands, including the resignation of Kolkata's police chief, were agreed upon. However, the junior doctors have stated they will only return to work once these assurances are fulfilled.
