Donald Trump's initial criminal trial commenced sluggishly, marked by delays stemming from disagreements over evidence and other last-minute disputes, even prompting the former president to appear visibly disinterested, occasionally closing his eyes during proceedings.
Scheduled to begin on Monday, jury selection didn't commence until late in the day, as defense attorneys and prosecutors debated multiple motions filed by Trump seeking to exclude specific evidence. The process of seating a jury may present challenges, potentially casting doubt on the trial's pace, as more than half of the initial pool of 96 potential jurors were excused after admitting they couldn't remain impartial.
This delay could benefit Trump, who has consistently sought to prolong legal proceedings as he campaigns to return to the White House.
The trial, expected to span six to eight weeks, may face further delays, potentially postponing the start of any of the three other criminal prosecutions he faces
before the November presidential election.
The case, brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, alleges that Trump falsified business records to conceal a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Trump denies any wrongdoing.
Latest Updates:
On Tuesday, the first seven jurors were selected for Donald Trump's trial involving hush money. Lawyers extensively questioned the jury pool about their social media activity, political affiliations, and personal backgrounds to determine their suitability for impartial judgment of the former president.
The chosen panelists include individuals from various professions: an information technology worker, an English teacher, an oncology nurse, a sales professional, a software engineer, and two lawyers.
