As the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) marks its 160th anniversary, it’s worth reflecting on how this pioneering organization has shaped global communication—from the telegraph to the digital age.

Founded in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union, the ITU began by standardizing cross-border telegraphy, eliminating the chaos of incompatible systems. Today, it plays a central role in allocating satellite orbits, setting broadband standards, and bridging the digital divide. Its evolution mirrors humanity’s leap from Morse code to AI, proving that collaboration can keep pace with innovation.

Yet challenges remain. Nearly a third of the world remains offline, and debates over equitable spectrum access, cybersecurity, and AI governance demand ITU’s leadership. As we celebrate its legacy, the question isn’t just about connecting the unconnected—but ensuring that technology serves all, not just a privileged few.

Finally, the ethical dimensions of emerging technologies AI-driven content moderation, deep-fake detection, and digital identity are thrust into the spotlight. No single government or corporation can write the rulebook for technologies that cross every border and touch every citizen.

The ITU must take a leadership role in articulating principles for transparency, accountability, and human rights in the digital realm. By convening experts, NGOs, and governments, it can lay the groundwork for norms that safeguard free expression while curbing the worst abuses of surveillance and manipulation.

After 160 years, the ITU’s mission remains unchanged: to build a communications ecosystem that empowers all of humanity, now guided by the dual imperatives of equity and responsibility.
