Supreme Court Issues Contempt Notices to States Over Temporary Police Chief Appointments

The Supreme Court of India is taking action against eight states for their practice of appointing temporary police chiefs. A bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud heard arguments on October 17th regarding three petitions challenging these appointments. The court issued contempt notices to the states involved, including Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, Bihar, Rajasthan, and West Bengal. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) also received notices.
