Southern India’s High Courts Lead in Filling Judicial Vacancies, Thanks to Timely Collegium Recommendations

As of November 1, 2024, the judge vacancies in the high courts of southern India are as low as 4%, while the vacancies in other regions are as high as 49%. The collegium's timely recommendations for judge appointments are a contributing factor to the success of the southern states. 


Here are some examples of judge vacancies in the high courts of southern India:


  • Kerala HC: Has a vacancy of 4%, which is the lowest among all big HCs

  • Madras HC: Has a vacancy of 11%

  • Karnataka HC: Has a vacancy of 19% 


In contrast, the Allahabad HC, the country's largest HC, has 49% of its judges' posts vacant.
