Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently looked back on her pivotal 2015 decision to welcome hundreds of thousands of refugees into Germany, marking ten years since her famous stance during the migrant crisis.

Merkel described her choice as rooted in humanitarian values and respect for human dignity, emphasizing that she could never have chosen force to prevent refugees from entering the country. While acknowledging the immense challenges and political backlash especially the rise of the right-wing AfD party she maintained that the decision was morally necessary.

Merkel highlighted that much has been accomplished in integrating refugees into German society, especially in terms of workforce participation and community life.

Nevertheless, she admitted that integration remains an ongoing challenge, with many refugees still facing barriers in employment and social acceptance. Despite the successes, German public opinion remains divided, and skepticism about refugee policies has grown over the years.

Merkel’s decision not only shaped Germany’s modern identity as a country of immigration but also changed the political landscape.

Her statement "Wir schaffen das" ("We can do this") became a rallying cry for both supporters and critics. As Germany continues to reflect on its approach to immigration, Merkel stands by her original conviction: the right thing was done, even if tough questions remain.
