The Hague, 3 March 2025 – Judge Iwasawa Yuji of Japan has been elected as the new President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), following the resignation of Judge Nawaf Salam. The election, conducted by fellow judges, fills the vacancy left by Judge Salam’s departure on 14 January 2025.

Judge Iwasawa, who has served on the ICJ bench since June 2018, will complete the remainder of the term, initially set to expire on 5 February 2027.

His legal career includes a tenure as a professor of international law at the University of Tokyo and leadership as the Chairperson of the United Nations Human Rights Committee.

His election aligns with Article 14 of the ICJ’s Rules of Court, ensuring the continuity of leadership within the world’s principal judicial organ.
