On 1 July 2025, the UK Supreme Court hosted the official launch of the UK Association of Black Judges (UKABJ) a significant step towards tackling the historic underrepresentation of Black lawyers and judges in the legal profession.

Lord Leggatt opened the event by acknowledging the reality that, while progress in diversity has been seen across several groups, Black lawyers continue to remain underrepresented within the judiciary. He highlighted initiatives such as the Stephen Lawrence Scholars Programme and the Black Talent Charter, which the Court supports as part of its commitment to meaningful change.

Judge Cordella Bart-Stewart OBE, who has had a distinguished career spanning over three decades, spoke candidly about the challenges that shaped the establishment of the UKABJ. Noting that Black judges make up just 1% of the judiciary, she described this as a stark reminder that the judicial system, to inspire public confidence, must reflect the communities it serves.

She reminded the audience that the launch of this Association is not just about today’s judges, but about future generations of aspiring lawyers who deserve to see themselves represented at every level of the justice system.

The UKABJ’s creation represents more than just an organisational milestone; it is a foundation for change. It acknowledges the importance of diversity, fairness, and genuine inclusion in a profession that shapes the rule of law and society itself.
