Supreme Court Reminds Judges of Professional Conduct After Controversial Remarks

Recently, the Supreme Court of India took a significant step after noticing inappropriate remarks made by a Karnataka High Court judge during court proceedings. The SC intervened to remind all judges about the importance of maintaining decorum and professionalism in the courtroom.

In one instance, the HC judge referred to a Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru as "Pakistan," which caused widespread offense. In another case, the same judge used disrespectful language toward a female lawyer. Although the judge later apologized, he initially claimed his remarks were misunderstood.

Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, emphasized that judges must remain aware of their own biases and opinions, ensuring fairness and respect in their conduct. He highlighted the need for judges to avoid harmful or offensive comments.

"Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Judges have, on several occasions, made remarks that reveal bias, particularly against women. The increase in such cases is more noticeable now due to the Supreme Court's live-streaming of hearings and the greater media coverage of courtroom proceedings, which brings judges' words into the public domain, prompting them to be more cautious.

The SC also stressed that judges should refrain from making comments reflecting stereotypes about women’s clothing, behavior, or societal roles, as such remarks harm the judiciary’s reputation. The court concluded by reiterating that a judge’s primary duty is to remain impartial and fair.

It is hoped that judges will take this guidance seriously, upholding the dignity and respect of the judiciary moving forward.
