In a case that shocked both Malaysia and Singapore, Singaporean national Shahrul Nizam Zuraimy, 36, has been sentenced to 72 years in prison and 24 strokes of the cane for the brutal 2019 murders of his wife and stepson
The Melaka High Court found Shahrul guilty of murdering 27-year-old Norfazera Bidin and her 11-year-old son, Muhammad Iman Ashraf Abdullah, at their home in October 2019. In a particularly gruesome act, he dismembered their bodies "like chickens," wrapped their heads to conceal the smell and blood, and hid them above the ceiling. Other body parts were discarded in a bushy area
The court heard that Shahrul committed the acts in an attempt to prevent the victims from being identified. He was arrested in Singapore with the cooperation of authorities and handed over to Malaysia
While the prosecution and the victims' family sought the death penalty, Judge Datuk Anselm Charles Fernandis handed down consecutive sentences of 36 years and 12 strokes for each count of murder. The sentence is backdated to his arrest date in October 2019
The victim's mother, Fatimah Latiff, broke down in court, stating, "A heartless person, so cruel to kill my daughter and grandson... I want justice"
This case highlights the severe penalties for violent crime in Malaysia and the cross-border cooperation between Malaysian and Singaporean authorities.
