At a recent event in New Delhi, Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta raised concerns about the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) misusing funds meant for legal aid.
He questioned how, despite previously claiming a lack of resources to help underprivileged individuals, NALSA now hosts conferences with High Court judges accommodated in luxury hotels. Justice Datta recounted an incident from his time at the Calcutta High Court, where a poor petitioner struggled to afford travel to the Supreme Court. Despite legal obligations to assist marginalized people, authorities refused financial support.

This raises questions about whether the Legal Services Authority Act is fulfilling its intended purpose. Justice Datta urged introspection on whether these priorities truly serve those in need of legal aid.
