On Friday, a division bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court issued an order to reduce the minimum eligibility marks for OBC candidates in the civil judge recruitment test to 50% in the LLB exam. Previously, both general and OBC candidates needed 70%, while SC/ST candidates required 50%. The court directed the registrar general of the MP High Court to issue a notification within three days, following a challenge by advocate Varsha Patel from Narsinghpur. Patel contested changes in the recruitment rules, asserting that the new criteria, requiring 70% in LLB or three years of practice, were illegal.
Additionally, the petitioner raised concerns about the interview scoring system and the identical eligibility criteria for OBC and general candidates, alleging violations of constitutional articles and reservation rules.
The bench, comprising Chief Justice R V Malimath and Justice Vishal Misra, granted relief to OBC candidates, lowering their LLB eligibility requirement to 50%. The petitioner was represented by senior counsel Naman Nagrath and advocates Rameshwar Singh Thakir and Vinayak Shah.
