The Supreme Court of India has introduced a new statue of Lady Justice, marking a significant shift from the traditional portrayal of her as blindfolded.
This updated statue, now located in the judges' library, features Lady Justice with open eyes, symbolizing that justice in India is not blind but aware of societal realities.
Notably, the sword in her left hand has been replaced with the Constitution of India, representing the law's foundation on constitutional principles rather than force.
Traditionally, Lady Justice's blindfold has symbolized impartiality, suggesting that justice is delivered equally, irrespective of status or wealth.
The sword has historically stood for authority and the power to punish. However, the new design seeks to move away from these colonial-era symbols and instead embrace modern values of governance and justice.
According to sources, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who commissioned the statue, believes it is time for India to discard remnants of British colonialism within its legal symbols.
The statue continues to hold the scales of justice in her right hand, a lasting symbol of fairness and the balance courts must maintain when weighing arguments from both sides before reaching a verdict.
