A district judge from Solapur, Maharashtra, reportedly fell victim to a scam in which an unknown individual used a photo of a Bombay High Court judge as their WhatsApp profile picture to solicit Rs 50,000, according to police reports on Saturday.

On Friday, the Mumbai police filed a first information report (FIR) under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and IT Act after the high court's registrar lodged a complaint.

The complaint states that on Friday, the district judge received a WhatsApp message from a number displaying the high court judge's photo. The district judge, familiar with the HC judge, was asked for Rs 50,000 with the promise of repayment by the end of the day. Trusting the request, the district judge transferred the amount but grew suspicious upon receiving another message with further demands.

The district judge then contacted the high court's registrar's office and discovered that the judge whose photo was used had never requested money.
