Singapore and Hong Kong have implemented bans on the sale of MDH Pvt. and Everest Food Products Pvt., respectively, due to the alleged discovery of the carcinogenic pesticide ethylene oxide in various spice mixes.

Singapore initiated similar measures against Everest the previous week, accusing the company of exceeding permissible ethylene oxide limits. Hong Kong's Centre For Food Safety detected ethylene oxide in three spice mixes from MDH Group and Everest Group's Fish Curry Masala, prompting the prohibition of these products.

Both countries have taken steps to safeguard public health, with Singapore recalling Everest's products as well, citing elevated pesticide levels.

This action echoes previous instances, such as the US FDA's 2023 recall of Everest Food Products due to Salmonella contamination.

What is Salmonella?

Salmonella is dangerous because it's a bacteria commonly found in contaminated food, especially raw meat, poultry, eggs, and unpasteurized dairy.

If ingested, it can cause symptoms like diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. In severe cases, it can lead to dehydration, hospitalization, or even death, particularly in vulnerable populations like young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
