The Delhi High Court has issued a contempt notice to Wikipedia for not complying with a court order related to edits made on a page about the news agency ANI. The court criticized Wikipedia for failing to disclose information about three accounts that made the edits, which referred to ANI as a "propaganda tool" of the Indian government. ANI had previously filed a defamation case against Wikipedia over the edits. The court expressed frustration over Wikipedia's delayed response, warning that if the platform continues to disregard Indian laws, it could face restrictions or even a ban in India.
Wikipedia's defense cited delays in providing the required information due to the platform not being based in India and the need for further documentation. However, Justice Navin Chawla was dissatisfied with this explanation and reiterated that the company must comply with Indian regulations. The court has scheduled the next hearing for October and has instructed that a representative of Wikipedia be present.
In July, the Wikimedia Foundation clarified that it acts as a "technology host" and does not directly edit or add content on Wikipedia, distancing itself from the edits in question.
