The Punjab government in Pakistan has requested additional time from the Lahore High Court regarding the renaming of Shadman Chowk in Lahore after the freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

This request was made during a hearing presided over by Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza, following a petition filed by the Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation Pakistan.

The petition sought contempt proceedings against three high-ranking officials for not complying with the court's 2018 order to rename the chowk after Bhagat Singh.

Originally, the Lahore High Court had instructed the government to rename Shadman Chowk in honor of Bhagat Singh, where he was executed 93 years ago.

During the recent hearing, the Assistant Advocate General of the Punjab government, Imran Khan, asked for more time to issue a notification regarding the renaming. The petitioner's counsel argued that significant delays had already occurred in the matter. The court granted the government's request for an extension and adjourned the hearing until June 7.

This delay comes amid allegations of contempt against the provincial and district governments for not complying with the court's order issued in 2018.

Bhagat Singh, known for his role in the struggle for the independence of the Indian subcontinent, was executed by British rulers on March 23, 1931, along with Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, after being convicted of conspiring against the regime. Initially sentenced to life imprisonment, Bhagat Singh was later given the death penalty in another case. He is revered not only by Sikhs and Hindus but also by Muslims in the subcontinent.
