Allahabad High Court Flags Misuse of SC/ST Act for Compensation

The Allahabad High Court in Prayagraj has noted that the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act of 1989, which was originally introduced to offer protection and aid to victims of discrimination, is being exploited by certain individuals as a means to secure compensation


The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act of 1989 is a law in India aimed at preventing discrimination and atrocities against individuals belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).


The Act provides for stringent punishment for offenses committed against these communities, ensures their protection, and guarantees them relief and compensation in case of atrocities.


It was introduced to address historical injustices and to provide a legal framework to deter violence and discrimination against marginalized groups.
