A Karnataka woman request for alimony totaling ₹6.16 lakh per month, which included ₹60,000 for monthly expenses (with a separate amount for dining) and ₹50,000 for legal fees, was rejected by a single-judge bench of the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday. The woman also requested ₹15,000 for clothing expenses.

Justice Lalitha Kanneganti, who presided over the hearing, dismissed the request, stating, "If she wants to spend this much money, let her earn it." This exchange was captured in a widely circulated video of the court proceedings.

The woman, who currently receives ₹50,000 per month, argued for a higher amount, claiming her ex-husband spends over ₹10,000 a month on clothing and that she should be afforded a similar budget, as her current wardrobe consists of "old clothes."

Reports also indicated that the woman's alimony demand included ₹4-5 lakh for medical expenses, such as treatment and physiotherapy for knee pain, which she attributed to her ex-husband's negligence.

However, Justice Kanneganti was not convinced, questioning the reasonableness of the requested amounts. According to the legal news website Bar and Bench, she asked,

"Does anybody spend this much? A single lady by herself...?"

The court did not dismiss the alimony request entirely but urged the woman to present a more realistic account of her expenses. "If you want an order, I want actual figures, not this 'lakhs of rupees'. Otherwise, I will dismiss your application," she was quoted by the Times of India.

Additionally, the woman was cautioned against trying to "exploit the process of the court" and was reprimanded for attempting to negotiate with the court. Justice Kanneganti emphasized, "Your client is not understanding... you, her lawyer, should understand and advise her. This is not a place for bargaining. You are supposed to tell the court her actual expenses. We will give you one last chance to be reasonable... else straightaway we will dismiss."
